More Fad Diets

No carbs, low fat, lots of water, a new food “pyramid” — what’s a dieter to do? It seems like every food group with an “advocacy” association jumped on the bandwagon to promote purchases of their commodity by insisting you can lose weight by eating more of their food. I first noticed the 5 a Day-for Better Health seal on the ripe bananas bags at Vons. Pretty soon the milk industry got hold of some shaky statistics supposedly indicating women lose more weight around their middles if they drink/eat three servings of dairy products daily. Quickly came the apple people with a 3-Apple-a-Day Plan. I was already eating two bowls of Kellogs Special K cereal, and feeling strangely starving, so the addition of apples and milk is welcome.

Several versions of the “super foods” list exist. The 14-item prescription for longevity touted by Dr. Steven Pratt in SuperFoods Rx includes all but one of the ten-item list from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which advocates eating cantaloupe as a source of vitamins A and C. Also, the CSPI online listing is at odds with a mailing from them, with salmon and bran cereal online and fat-free milk and blueberries on paper. The blueberries are one of Dr. Pratt’s “everyday foods that can change your life for the better!” Although he ignores milk itself, he does advocate using yoghurt and kefir.

Now that I’m eating all these super healthy foods for weight loss — why am I gaining?
